General Yoga
The style of yoga that I personally prefer is soft, sensual intimate, fluid.
Donna Farhi writes in her book - My teacher Ray encouraged me to work with the body in the service of regenerating the connection to the spirit - my gift to those who would wish to reunite with their spiritual life through the body.
She goes on to write:
...slowly uncovered a more natural way of discovering the essence of practice through form. The forms then become vehicles for experiencing oneís essential nature rather than goals in and of themselves. Then whether you attain any particular posture becomes irrelevant. The shift from dominating, controlling, or ignoring nature to listening and working with natureís wisdom marks the beginning of this change of mind.
When we shift from being the mover to letting life move through us, we make the first step toward surrendering our heart to spiritual practice.
This step marks the beginning of yoga as a life path rather than a form of sophisticated calisthenics. -
This last line particularly resonates with me. Learning and doing the asanas or postures are beautiful but practicing yoga as a life path embracing mind, body, and spirit appeal to me so much more. In each yoga session I strive to bring a little of all aspects of yoga into the teachable moment, whether it be by appealing to the intellect by reading a passage form a sacred text; or devotional yoga by chanting or singing; or deepening the physical aspect of the practice by teaching more about pranyama or breath awareness.
A good yoga class is like a well presented meal, it is balanced, it has a variety of colors, textures and aromas. When you are finished eating it, you feel full and satisfied in both mind and body.
Prenatal Yoga
Prenatal yoga with Dr. Carol Penn, D.O., M.A.,RYT, LCCE, FACCE . Carol is a long time birth advocate and volunteer with Lamaze International who has worked as a childbirth educator and doula for the past 14 years specializing in non-pharmacological pain management, breast feeding and labor support. Teaching privately as well as at St Luke’s Rossevelt Hospital in New York City and currently teaching Lamaze child birth education classes at Jersey Shore University Hospital, Carol has literally prepared thousands of women for childbirth. In her prenatal yoga classes participants can anticipate to be expertly guided in:
- asana practices to strengthen and build stamina in the muscles used during childbirth;
- meditation practices that connect mind, body, and spirit as a women makes the journey to motherhood;
- pranyama practices and visualization to release tension and manage pain during labor;
- learn to build trust and confidence in the innate capabilities of your body
The American college of Obstetrics and Gynecology supports and recommends 30 minutes of daily exercise in pregnancy. Current research is showing that babies born to exercising mothers are healthier and experience fewer fetal complications during labor and may even receive neurobehavioral benefits as a result of their mom’s exercise regime while in utero.
Childbirth Preparation
Dr. Penn, a nationally recognized authority in childbirth education, is a childbirth mentor whose eclectic approach combines her knowledge as a yoga instructor, doula, and certified childbirth educator. Her unique approach focuses on the birth process as a mother-baby partnership. Her classes demonstrate to parents to be in the right brain to right brain synchrony that is necessary to the birth process as well as to early parenting skills. Students will learn intentional touch, massage, yoga postures, and breath work. Utilizing an evidence based approach, the six care practices are used to guide a woman and her partner on an intuitive journey that helps to build confidence for labor, birth, and early parenting. The classes are also designed to help couples begin to relate to each other in their new role as partners who are now parents.
The six care practices are:
- Labor begins on its own.
- Freedom of movement throughout labor.
- Continuous labor support.
- No routine interventions.
- Non-supine (e.g. Upright or side-lying) Positions for Birth
- No separation of Mother and Baby with unlimited opportunity for breastfeeding.
Dr. Penn is a long time birth advocate and volunteer with Lamaze International. During her tenure, Dr. Penn has been the recipient of the Lamaze International President’s award twice as well as chairing the Lamaze International community outreach programs. She is a fellow in the American academy of childbirth educators and a trainer for Passion for Birth. Dr. Penn has also served on the Executive committee as secretary-treasurer for the last 4 years.
